This year the Nolen Wilson Award for Contribution to Youth Basketball was given to Chip Hamlet, St. Dominic’s Athletic Director and the coach of countless competitive basketball teams over many years. Chip is one of the good guys, a great coach and teacher who has sent many players on to greater success. We were very pleased to have the opportunity to honor Chip tonight. This is always a highlight of the Holiday Classic.
The Redhawk 14s had a terrific end of season tournament in St. Louis. After winning their division with 3 games, each by 70 points, they were able to match up against the champion and runner up from the other 8th grade division. At the end of the day, the Redhawks had won 5 in a row, beating all contenders, and made some new fans! It was a fitting end to an impressive run. Redhawks won their last 12 games convincingly. Team Captain Kenner Sernel ended his three years with the Redhawk organization leading his squad to victory. Two year Redhawk veteran Harrison Kelly was a scoring machine over our last 2 weeks, with a career high 39 point, 8 three point performance along the way. Jonathon Duncan continued to stuff all the stat categories. Daedrick Cail was a relentless force. Point guard Wes Taylor and Stretch forward Cameron Matthews were awesome additions to the crew for St. Louis. Big minutes and key contributions from Will Griffith and Jett Hatfield were key. All in all, a great weekend.

This year’s Nolen Wilson Memorial Award for Contribution to Youth Basketball was presented to the family of Monte Sernel, the late father of Redhawk captain Kenner Sernel. Kenner and his family were on hand for the ceremony at MBCC on Saturday, 12/19. It was a nice moment, remembering Monte’s great spirit.
